Pest it is this Hornet
Here comes the insect flying, but then this hornet is minus the sting. Not one bit intimidating, how you wish you could just squash this irritating bug with a flyswatter. One had a lot of expectations from this one, coming from Seth Rogen with his uncanny sense of humor. He not only stars as the Green Hornet but also co-writes the screenplay. Then there is director Michel Gondry of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind fame (that enigmatically beautiful film). But unfortunate as it is, this hornet as mentioned before, is all buzz no sting.
George W. Trendle and Fran Striker created the American pulp hero way back in 1936 for radio. Later the masked vigilante made his successful appearance in comics and several on screen hit adaptations. One of them had the martial-arts superstar Bruce Lee essaying the role of Kato. There was an entire generation which swore by the Green Hornet back then. The ones from those days gone by, hoping to get a genuine rush of nostalgia by opting for this theatrical version, are in for a big disappointment. This Columbia Pictures presents remains true to the poorly made high budgeted actioners of recent times. Lots of bullets sprayed all over the screen, blinding explosions taking place every now and then, car chases galore (and you snore, snore and snore some more).
Sadly enough, Seth Rogen gets the act all wrong and the writing is blasphemy, simply pointless. Then there is Jay Chow, the multifaceted Taiwanese actor, director, producer, musician and singer. As Kato, he is agile alright, but at the same time, makes us realize how dearly we miss Bruce “Enter the Dragon” Lee. The subtle blend of humor, wit and engrossing action lacks here big time. Then there is Cameron Diaz, the tall and slender Hollywood beauty. Sadly enough, all she does is giving that charismatic smile of hers. As though she can feel us gaze and question her, what are you doing here Cameron?
